Koop, Rakochy, and the Steinbach Pistons at the Top of the MJHL - Western Canada Cup Bound
This past Wednesday the Steinbach Pistons were at the top of the world when they conquered the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. With winning the Turnbull Trophy in Game 6 of the Championship Finals now send the team off to the 2013 Western Canada Cup that takes place in Nanaimo BC from April 27th to May 5th. GDI trained goaltenders Corey Koop and Zach Rakochy were trained throughout the year by Dan Ferguson. Influential in large part to the teams success throughout the playoffs was Corey Koop. Awarded the MJHL playoffs Top Goaltender and MVP Award was with good reason as in 19 games played he held a .924 Save Percentage with 648 shots being thrown his way. Put to the test in many games, two that stand out to me are Game 4 ad 5 of the Finals against Dauphin and Game 3 against the Blues. With a 1-2 record in these 3 games he was still a difference maker and one of the reasons in large part for how the games were held to being so close - Especially in tough rinks as they were all on the road. Joining the team at the MJHL trade deadline Koop created a tandem with Rakochy that brought a strong sense of maturity to the team in the backend. Now, both goalies look to continue on the path of success and lead the Steinbach Pistons to the 2013 Western Canada Cup and onto the Junior A National Championship - RBC Cup in P.E.I.
